Back up first, always
Copy the save folder to a second location before launching a freshly patched build. A copied folder is the only rollback that reliably works.
Mods break by default
Any mod touching game code or data usually stops working until updated. Disable mods before patching, then re-enable them one at a time.
Dedicated servers
Update the server binary and the clients together. Version mismatch is the single most common post-patch 'cannot join' cause.
Config and rate settings
Patches occasionally add new settings keys. Diff your config against the shipped default rather than overwriting it wholesale.
Console players
Console updates arrive through the platform store with no mod concerns, but cross-play sessions still require every player on the current version.
