The Egg Incubator reads ambient temperature. Matching it to the egg cuts hatch time dramatically; mismatching it multiplies the wait.

Hot eggs
Scorching and Dragon eggs need heat. Place Heaters, or a Campfire, beside the incubator until the readout shows the correct band.
Cold eggs
Frozen and Damp eggs need cooling. Coolers next to the incubator, or building in a cold biome, gets the same result.
Neutral eggs
Common, Verdant, Electric and Rocky eggs hatch fastest at neutral temperature — keep them away from both Heaters and Coolers.
Check the readout
The incubator UI states whether the temperature is correct. Trust that line rather than the biome, since nearby structures shift it.
