What to buy first
Buy one trial deck per player, sleeves, and nothing else until you have played five games. That is enough to learn the game and know which archetype you want to invest in.

One trial deck each
Two players with two trial decks can play immediately. This is the cheapest legitimate way to learn the game properly.
Sleeves early
Cards shuffle hundreds of times while you learn. Sleeves cost little and prevent the wear that kills resale value.
Skip chase cards
Do not buy expensive singles before you know your archetype. Beginners routinely buy staples for a deck they never build.
One box, later
After a few games, a single booster box gives breadth for upgrades and trading stock. Loose packs are the expensive option.
Counters and playmat
Officially licensed life and material counters make tracking the game state far easier than dice and scrap paper.
